Περίληψη

Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία επιχειρεί να απαντήσει στο ερώτημα τί είναι η αρχιτεκτονική αν αποκοπεί από τη μορφή. Τι είναι η αρχιτεκτονική για έναν τυφλό; Ποια στοιχεία διεγείρουν τις εναπομείνασες αισθήσεις; Πώς γίνεται αντιληπτό το περιβάλλον;

Τόσο μέσω βιβλιογραφικής έρευνας για τις αισθήσεις, την τυφλότητα, την αντίληψη όσο και μέσω συνεντεύξεων με άτομα τυφλά ή μειωμένης όρασης προέκυψε ένα εύρος σχεδιαστικών αξόνων και οδηγιών. Τα στοιχεία αφορούν όλες τις κλίμακες, από τη χωρική διάρθρωση μέχρι τη σχεδίαση αντικειμένων. Σα βασικό συμπέρασμα προκύπτει ότι η σχεδίαση με γνώμονα τα άτομα με προβλήματα όρασης βασίζεται στη διέγερση του συνόλου των αισθήσεων, και οδηγεί σε πολυαισθητηριακά περιβάλλοντα. Παράλληλα ενισχύεται η έννοια της προσβασιμότητας συνολικά, και τελικά, η αρχιτεκτονική καθίσταται μια βαθιά πιο βιωματική εμπειρία, μειώνοντας την οπτικό- κεντρική της διάσταση.

Σε επίπεδο  σχεδιασμού τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας υλοποιήθηκαν σε ένα σχολείο, όπου το πρόγραμμα προέβλεπε τη συνεκπαίδευση παιδιών με προβλήματα όρασης και μη, θέτοντας  την πεποίθηση πως αν ένα πρόβλημα δεν το αντιμετωπιστεί ως τέτοιο, δε θα αναπαραχθεί. Παράλληλα, προτείνεται το εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα Montessori, το οποίο εκχωρεί περισσότερες ελευθερίες και ενισχύει τη γνώση μέσω της έρευνας. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στις υφές, για την απτική ενεργοποίηση. Στις οσμές σαν στοιχεία προσανατολισμού και μνήμης. Στην ακουστική τόσο για προσανατολισμό όσο και για πρόκληση συναισθημάτων. Καθώς και στις αναλογίες, για κάθε ηλικιακή ομάδα χωριστά, ώστε να υπάρχει αφενός πλήρης αυτοεξυπηρέτηση, σε επίπεδο λειτουργικό, και αφετέρου να είναι συναισθηματικά βιώσιμο σε επίπεδο ψυχολογικό.

Abstract

This thesis attempts a wider and insightful view on what is architecture when deprived of forms. What is architecture for the sightless? What does such a person perceive? How one understands distance? What does one feel?

A long term research based on bibliography over senses, blindness and the perceived environment, alongside a field research with visually impaired and blind, lead on some basic guidelines regarding design of all scales, from spatial arrangements to product design. It turned out that architecture giving prominence to the blind, can be equally accessible to people with kinetic and other disabilities but it can also expand ever further and be a much more fulfilling and deeply emotive experience, for sighted as well. The basic concept revolves around the idea that a safe, functional, but above all stimulating environment for the blind is a multi–sensory environment that arouses the rest of the senses.

The specifications collected are organized in a short handbook and applied on a design for a primary school. The fundamental concept is to create educational communities against exclusion; as such, the deviation of sighted and sightless is out of question. The school suggested follows the Montessori Method which is based on the involvement with nature and enhances free will and research as a mean of knowledge through experience.

Textures turn from a matching palette into haptic motives that stimulate not only hands, but the whole body. A differentiation of floor textures can be felt by the feet and be turned into a guideline. Odors and sounds can turn into orientation landmarks. The right analogies according to age groups provide absolute independence in self-care and mobility in terms of pure function and psychological viability, as everything follows the increasing scale of a growing child.
